Powerpuff Girls: 2016; original voice actors not happy

Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup, the heroes of “The Powerpuff Girls,” will return to television in 2016. The original voice actors have been forcefully replaced by a younger cast.

The revival of The Powerpuff Girls was announced last year, but now it is officially set for the 2016 Cartoon Network schedule. And the show’s original voice actors (from its 1998-2005 run) are bitter about this: they have been replaced by new voice actors.

Tara Strong, who originally voiced Bubbles, called the recasting “a stab in the heart.” She and the other main cast members said they were not asked to reprise their roles when the reboot was planned.

The triumvirate of Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup will always have a place in late 90s/early 2000s pop culture. What helped make these characters so recognizable and enduring were their distinct voices: Bubbles had a perky high-pitched voice, akin to the way many female anime characters were dubbed in the 1990s, Blossom had a confident, go-getter voice and attitude, and Buttercup had a tougher and more dangerous sounding voice.

It cannot be judged how different the new cast will sound because a trailer for the new series is yet to be released. However, the fact that the original actors were not asked to return surely is not “sugar, spice and everything nice.”
