Yesterday, I wrote about why I love Avatar: The Last Airbender in general. Today, I’ll review some of the show’s best moments: the fight scenes. This is by no means a conclusive list, but I’ve highlighted a few key battle sequences. I apologize for potentially leaving out your favorites.
5. Aang, Sokka, Katara, Toph, Jet, Longshot, and Smellerbee vs. The Dai Li (Lake Laogi, S2:17)
This battle packs about as much adrenaline as possible in 45 seconds. The scene begins when the extended Gaang enters a cavern underneath Lake Laogi, and they find several Dai Li members hanging upside down. The Gaang looks to be outmatched, but as one member of the party looks to be losing, another saves them by fending off the finishing blow. A highlight includes Longshot shooting an arrow into the Dai Li’s stone fist as it is about to hit Toph and Jet.
4. Aang vs Zuko (S1:15, Bato of the Water Tribe)
This is one of the greatest and most classic Aang-Zuko fights. Season one features a few of these, but most are comical in nature. This one, spanning across rooftops and around a well, features very precise choreography, almost as if Aang and Zuko are dancing. A highlight of season 1.
3. Aang, Sokka, and Katara vs. Zuko vs. Azula vs. Toph and Iroh (S2:8, The Chase)
Everyone’s kinda fighting everyone else in this battle and it’s a bit chaotic, but it works so well. The backdrop is an abandoned Western town with twists, turns, and dilapidated buildings. The catch of this fight is that all the players just happen to appear at that one destination. The stand off culminates when everyone gangs up on Azula. “Well, look at this, enemies and traitors all working together,” she begins. “I’m done, I know when I am beaten… A princess surrenders with honor.” The Gaang soon finds out that she is not quite done yet…
Avatar: The Last Airbender ends with two of the most anticipated fights: Aang vs. Ozai and Zuko vs. Azula. Aang and Ozai’s battle takes place over a period of three episodes, and it was definitely worth the wait. The animation is stunning and highly detailed as Aang and Ozai soar through the sky, jumping from cliff to cliff, taking out gigantic boulders in the process. Epic and powerful, this duel between two of the series giants lives up to the hype.
This is the greatest fight in all of Avatar for a few reasons. Firstly, this is not the composed Azula that viewers have seen throughout the series; here she is crazed and as Zuko puts it, “a bit off.” Opposed to Azula, Zuko is completed calm ad controlled in this battle, creating a very interesting result. Secondly, this is the ultimate battle of the siblings. For years, the two bottled up feelings of hatred for each other, and everything is released in this contest. Similarly to the Aang-Ozai fight, the raw power on display here is a spectacle to watch.
